Home Address Plaques For Emergency Purposes

Posted: August 31st, 2010 | Author: Kristina Klingmuller | Filed under: Home & Family | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , | No Comments »

When a house catches on fire the ideal situation is if the emergency services reach the house quickly, save people, and puts out the flames. However, getting started requires the emergency services reach the house in time. This is actually one of the biggest problems facing emergency crew these days.

Dialing 911 from the home of the fire shows the switchboard the address. However the address that shows up may be the old one associated with the number. This causes the crew to be sent to an entirely incorrect location losing a lot of valuable time that can lead to tragedy. Storms and dark nights exacerbate the situation.

Decreasing the time required to get the scene makes a big difference. A few minutes either way suggest either aversion or invitation of a disaster. Police-men responding to domestic matters are also affected by these issues. Putting up a reflective address sign helps make the residences much easier to locate.

Address plaques, or more generally referred to as address signs, add that last touch to your front lawn, mailbox or front door. Address signs are not anymore only functional, doing more than just telling everybody exactly where you live and has become a statement of your style. They’re available in a wide array of materials that can consist of wood, ceramic, brass and iron. There are also many different kinds of signs, from solar house numbers to brass mail box plaques.

The simplest of all address signs is the home number plaque. The key is acquiring a plaque that fits you and your houses architectural model. The selections are practically limitless, from plain brass numbers to the fanciful ceramic plaque. Size may also be important in the home number plaque. Make certain the plaque is visible from the road and that the color of the plaque contrasts well with your property color. You can try drawing it onto a sheet of paper, then looking at it from the road after you have taped it to your house to see if it’s suitable.

In case you have ornamental bushes along the front of your home or a extensive expanse of lawn from the road, it may possibly be tough to find a property number plaque that matches your needs. If that is the case, then think about a lawn address sign. These signs are more readily noticeable to individuals on the street.

It’s A Small World: Fit For Your Desk

Last week was my husband’s birthday, and let me tell you, I had run into a real situation. I didn’t even have a clue of what to get him. My husband’s a really technical guy. This is all in relation to computers and devices that I will neither remember nor comprehend. And furthermore, if he truly desires it, he just purchases it himself. I strive not take into consideration the sum of money that goes towards this.

Then, I was downstairs trying to create any type of headway in tidying his office, when I finally realized that the answer had been staring me in the face. To explain this, permit me describe his office first. My husband’s office is the dark, dank pit of everything is unholy. One can find piles of documents all over the place, stacks of books, file folders, paperclips, post-its, you name the office supply and it is scattered in there somewhere. And am I allowed to lay a hand on any of the papers or books? Oh, no! All of it is where it is for a reason, he would be unable to find several hours of work and that would be a travesty for him So I dust them lightly and sanitize on all sides of them, delicately throwing away any litter that clearly does not include notes on it (he just loves to use napkins for his brainwork).

All of this, I do think I can handle. So it is apparent that a man works here, okay. At the least, my cleaning skills cannot be held accountable for that! But the area is completely unornamented; other than if you count the amazing leather bound books sitting around, the mini sculpture on his desk, and european map poster on the back wall. Now, I am pretty positive, knowing my spouse, that the inspiration behind the statue on the desk and the poster on the wall, is that he desired to appear well-learned. Obviously, we could have enough money better than that cheap poster, however he would never spend the time which makes it happen.

So, clearly a gift to him is also a present to me! I searched high and low before I knew exactly what I sought after. To my surprise, I got the idea of getting him a globe. I by no means would have dreamed that this would be the solution, but the more often I thought about it, I realized a Replogle Globe could be a simple method to offer his place of work some greatly needed stylishness and charm. Spontaneously adding a vintage cartography globe to his office may well manifest that “old school” look that you often see in an old library in England or something. I found delightful old world globes, as well as desktop globes, and also floor standing globes from Replogle, which I’m sure will look amazingly elegant (Definitely thousands of times better, compared to that darn map poster on the wall!).

I ended up choosing an old world desktop globe and slipped it on his muddled desk while he was at a baseball game. What a surprise, ha! It was fairly tricky getting all his textbooks and manuscripts back exactly as they were, but we seemed to handle it okay. And boy, did he love “his” gift! (I sure do!)

Why Bother With New Carpet Pads?

Posted: August 18th, 2010 | Author: Aladdin Modjarrad | Filed under: Home & Family | Tags: , , , , , , , , | No Comments »

Carpet pads are the unseen component of a complete flooring system that help your new carpeting last longer, wear more evenly and feel better underfoot than just carpet alone does. Choosing a good carpet pad to go with your new carpeting is essential.

Carpet pads are found in three main types. The most common are fiber, sponge or a combination of foam and rubber. You will also find that there are different grades available in each group. The thickness of the cushion itself coupled with the weight per square yard are how they are differentiated from one another.

The type and amount of foot traffic in a room should be taken into consideration when choosing the right carpet pad for your home. Heavy traffic areas, stairwells, and hallways require carpet pads that are no thicker than 7/16 inch. These carpet pads should also be dense and heavy. Do not use a thick, light weight cushion in these areas as it will allow the carpet backing to flex too much. This can cause the carpeting to fall apart prematurely.

If you are having new carpet installed it may be tempting to ask the installer to use the old carpet padding that is already there. To do so though will usually immediately void the warranty on the carpet. And besides, why use nasty old carpet pads underneath your brand new carpeting?

When they are installing a customer’s new carpets most good installation firms will offer to take old carpet padding away with them. Most reputable companies also participate in carpet pad recycling these days as well. The average carpet pad will not degrade in a landfill, so by recycling the carpet pads these firms are really doing their bit for the environment, as well as helping their customers out.

Bringing The Outdoors To Your Home

If you’re an outdoor person and always long to be surrounded with nature, you will love rustic home design.

Contrary to popular belief, rustic home design has many faces. It’s not just using Adirondack furniture or hanging all animal-themed wall decors.

Rustic design has various styles. Sure, wood reigns supreme but there are other colors and materials that can take on as accents. There are also sub-themes within the rustic theme. Examples are the Old West lifestyle, high mountain forests of the inner city, cattle ranch, plantation home, cabin log, etc.

You don’t necessarily have to use wood as material if it will cause you hassle in doing so. You can just use paint that is reminiscent of a wood paneling. Shades of tan, cream, beige, off-white and browns will work nicely. Wallpapering is an option if you do not want to paint your walls. Choose a wallpaper design with a background that depicts nature or the outdoors.

Next, continue the rustic theme with wood accents. Wrap grapevine wreaths with berries rather than flowers. In fact, avoid flowers altogether unless they’re real wildflowers arranged in a pitcher or rustic vase. Instead, use wooden bowls as decor accents and fill them with aromatic pinecones or wood shavings. A wooden bowl full of apples makes a wonderful hospitality gesture.

For furniture, choose fabrics meant to stand up to a true rustic environment, such as duck cloth or other canvas, corduroy and denim. Get rid of the wall-to-wall carpet and flooring of some kind. It could be wood flooring or wood-grain laminate if the budget requires, for a mountain-cabin style. Another option is to choose Southwestern-style floor tiles, if your decor heads west.

Area rugs offer terrific ways to tie furniture groups together. Accent the furniture with braided area rugs if your theme is more Eastern. Use striking Navajo or other Indian rugs and blankets if you’ve chosen a more Western theme.

What’s the outdoor like without animals? Therefore, bring them in! Animal images on the walls or miniatures are pretty accents for this home theme. It’s like always being in the outdoors in the presence of beautiful animals.

The final touches in rustic decor focus on vintage accents and collectibles.

In addition to area rugs, one item that is worthy to splurge on are quilts. These decors are must-have items for a rustic design. You can use one as a drape for chairs and sofas or as a wall hanging.

There are so many things that you can use. Base your choices on the many outdoor activities and their accessories. Fishing rods, oars, hunting paraphernalia and others might add to the rustic interior of your home. Just ascertain that your house will not be too crowded for you to move around.

Put your personality into your rustic decor, and you’ll have a home that you and your guests will love for a long time.

Exterior Decorating has never been so easy with these indoor outdoor area rugs.

Reduce Excessive Sun Exposure With Outside Shading

Posted: July 28th, 2010 | Author: Philip Kass | Filed under: Health & Fitness | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , | No Comments »

Rates of skin cancers have been steadily increasing in the last twenty years. The exact causes are unknown, but part of it may be due simply to a population with increasing proportion of older people. What is clear is that many cancers are driven by external events, one of which is excess exposure to UV-intense sun light. UV wavelength light is absorbed easily by the skin and causes damage to DNA. The damaged DNA overwhelms innate repair processes.

There are several ways to block skin-damaging UV. One way is to slather sunscreen or sunblock onto the skin. However, some people are uncomfortable with such a chemical solution and others experience physical irritation on exposure to such creams. To solve this problem, many turn to obvious solutions such as long sleeves, hats, but also home outdoor shades.

Astute homeowners know that attaching permanent outdoor shades to the house yield three kinds of benefits. One, the resale value of a home is increased by both the addition of more material and also the increase in usable space. Two, outdoor shades improve entertainment and lifestyle by providing space for such activities to take place. Third, outdoor shades are one way to stave off health-related issues stemming from overexposure to sun.

The diversity of possible outdoor shades means that there’s a choice for any price, labor or material requirement. Some shades are temporary, easy and cheap. Others are permanent, bulky and expensive. The trade-off naturally for cheap shades is durability and functionality. Expensive shades will tend to last longer, add more value to the home, and protect the home occupants or guests under a greater variety of conditions.

A typical type of temporary shade is the lightweight cabana for the pool. These are useful because they can shield the interior and increase privacy. Pool side-post umbrellas on the other hand don’t provide much privacy but are great for communal shading at an exterior table. Patio umbrella accessories also help make the umbrella more functional. Awnings and canopies come in lightweight form also.

Examples of fixed shades include awnings that can be fitted over windows to provide shade to both protect people outside but also to shield against light coming into the house. Pergolas and arbors are installed in gardens that provide incomplete shading, i.e. some light still filters through the top. Generally pergolas and arbors don’t have fabric but fabric may be added in creative ways. A gazebo is another popular free-standing structure for shade.

How much should the consumer expect to spend? For the temporary products, the entry prices may be only fifty to a hundred dollars. However, expect to be shocked by the larger structures and rightly so. A 12 foot gazebo may set one back easily by ten thousand. Furthermore, much time, labor, and space must be devoted to proper set-up. Despite the costs, most people would agree that protecting themselves and loved ones from ailments like skin cancers is priceless.

Tips On Decorating Your Kid’s Bedroom With Surfing Decor

Posted: July 5th, 2010 | Author: Rebecca McKeich | Filed under: Home & Family | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , | No Comments »

If you are looking for a cool and fun theme for your kid’s room and they love summer vacation at the beach or are a surfing fan, then you can’t go wrong with surfing decor. It brings life and color to the room as well a unique feel to the room, not the regular cartoon characters or Superheroes that seem to be in most kids’ rooms today.

You will of course need a surfboard or two; you can’t have a surfing theme without one. You can find used ones that are cheap at local surf shops or flea markets. Make a shelf on the wall with one with a few brackets or turn an old desk into something fun by replacing the top with a surfboard. If your child is a surfer, hang their board on the wall for when they are not using it and in the off season it decorates the room.

With some blue and white paint, you can turn those plain walls into crashing waves. Start with a nice blue on the walls and then using a paintbrush and the white paint, create the waves with big sweeping strokes of the brush. You could even overlap it to go onto the ceiling. If painting is not your strong point, using the rag painting method can give a similar effect with some smaller waves. Some white curtains that are airy and light will complement the colors of the walls.

Beach towels are not only the perfect addition to hang on the wall or drape somewhere, but you can use one to upholster a chair in the room. No beach theme is complete without at least one beach towel in the mix.

Decorating the walls with their favorite surfer or just surfing and beach posters will add color and keep to the surfer decor style of the room. Think about hanging some beach signs too, you can find new and vintage styles in shops and online.

A few novelty items can also add to the fun and accent the theme. Take a look at some surfboard wall hooks for their coats and bags, surfboard clocks are also very cool for a kid, even surfboard print light switch plates to put up can be found. There are a variety of novelty items that you can allow your child to choose from to add his own touch.

Bedding today is all about themes and pulls a room together nicely. You’ll find there will be a large selection for you to choose from in many different colorful or even subtle designs. Let your son or daughter pick out their favorite here, whether it is surfboards, a beach scene or even their favorite surfer.

Kids love summer and summer vacation, and when you think of summer you think of the coastal decor. Even if your kid isn’t a surfer you can still transform their ordinary room into something spectacular with the right pieces of surfer decor that will make them feel like they are at the beach every day.

Asian Decor And Decorating On A Budget

Posted: June 28th, 2010 | Author: Dana Burnett | Filed under: Home & Family | Tags: , , , , | No Comments »

Do you love looking at the beautifully decorated rooms in magazine? Do the breathtaking Asian inspired spaces cause you to crave to bring just a little of the Far east into your household? Does your budget restrict the amount of cash that you can invest on designing? Avoid worrying and adhere to these easy to follow ideas for an Asian influenced room with a budget.

This is a single redecorating trend which is easy on the budget. The whole idea behind this trend is straightforwardness and minimalism. These facts alone make it a trend that is very easy on your pocket book. This is on the list of very few design styles that work nicely with basic white walls, an additional reward if you don’t want to cope with the inconvenience and cost of painting.

For making this design work, take out as much as workable from the room. Clear away all of those worn out accents that have been collecting dust and donate them or recycle them into another room. In case you are doing this in your living room, keep only the basics: sofa, a chair or two, coffee table, and a set of end tables. Dependent on the dimensions of the room, you might be able to get away with a bookcase as well. If you are doing this project in your bedroom, keep only the bed, dresser, and nightstands.

At this time take a look at the furniture that you retained. You need to organize it in the room to make the most space and natural flow for traffic. This varies from house to house and room to room, so play around with it until you’re happy. I do not feel that there are actually any set rules on furnishing positioning, do what seems correct for you, just remember that minimalism is the idea. You can always remove more furniture if needed.

The furniture in Asian inspired rooms is often deeper woods or black. A little bit of touch up staining or a walk out to the backyard with a can of paint may be required here. Don’t worry if your furniture is old fashioned, you might possibly be surprised how a little coat of paint varies the look and feel entirely. If you are likely to be utilizing your old table lamps, give them a quick coat of black or red paint also.

Once you have got your furniture positioned, it’s time to think about color. Asian themes use mostly red and black in the color scheme, so do you have to purchase black slipcovers or new black bedding. If that’s the case, now is the time to do it. While you’re at it, include a few decorative pillows in solid red or in a bright geometric pattern.

Now that you have the fundamentals, it’s time to add accessories! This is the exciting part. Given that Asian designs focus on the effect rather than volume, pick your decorative accessories mindfully. Candles are always a delightful addition to any room; use some plain white ones around the room in simple candle plates or trays. Pick only one or two additional accents and you’re succesfully done.

The benefit to this kind of design is its bare-bones style. It can be integrated into any room at very little cost you. In just one day, you can convert your room from dreary to fashionable without spending a fortune.

Now that you know the essentials of Asian design, why not add some Asian Decor to your home today?

Home Dcor Catalogs On Video: The New Way To Shop

Posted: June 28th, 2010 | Author: Dana Burnett | Filed under: Home & Family | Tags: , , , | No Comments »

Think of that long ago experience when you would walk out to the mailbox and there, included with the bothersome sales flyers and tedious bills, was a brand new catalog of home dcor and decorative accents? Go back to that sinful satisfaction of being able to see the newest styles and general trends while not even having to get dressed or leave your house. There was an appeal to those beautifully laid out pages, full of items that promised to make your house stunning, and as the web has grabbed its portion of the home accents market, and those seductive catalogs are becoming a thing of the good old days.

These days, online searches have taken the place of a lazy day squandered browsing all the way through catalogs while still in our pajamas. Now you will simply just type in what you are looking for and hope that some merchant out there has it in stock, but imagine if you don’t know what you are looking for? Many of us widely used those catalogs for getting ideas and dreams about what we wanted our rooms to become in another galaxy where everything was attainable. What could shopping online hope to offer us in equivalence?

Realizing the feeling of loss because of the lack of the printed catalog, some home dcor suppliers have developed a virtual adaptation of the paper catalog and brought the old sentimental old classic straight into the rooms of the web generation by developing video versions of home decoration catalogs. A small number of merchants are taking advantage of this marketing yet, but as it increases buzz, several more will without doubt be following suit.

The video version of home decor catalogs give customers the possibility to spend a calm afternoon dreaming of what their rooms could be and gathering ideas for their upcoming purchase. It’s a tiny touch of retro marketing and advertising combined with the sinful delight many of us love.

Isn’t a little sinful delight fun?

There are primitive accessories, folk art accessories, permanent botanicals, and much more. It is possible to then determine nearly every one of your color decisions on this. Decide on complimentary colors or contrasting colors, depending on the feeling you desire to create.

If you’re going to be shopping for brand new furnishings, consider level of comfort primarily and fashion secondly. Any kind of pieces of furniture may very well be evolved to country style by its setting or with vibrant throws and accent cushions. With country home dcor, it really is all about comfort and useful functionality, not the simple design and minimalism.

Include decorative accents gradually until eventually you are satisfied with the all round look. Take into account, with country home dcor there isn’t any real specifications. Your accents may very well be anything from flea market finds to treasures that you found on the internet. This independence tends to make this style an optimal preference for people stepping into their very first place with mainly second hand items!
